The Openvale Council has approved a major regeneration plan for the riverside district following a unanimous vote at its latest session. The scheme addresses decades of underinvestment by creating new public spaces, housing and commercial zones while strengthening flood defences along the river.

Key Elements of the Plan

The project will deliver 220 new homes, a 12-acre riverside park, retail units and a business hub. Cycle paths and pedestrian routes will link the area to the town centre. Sustainable features include rain gardens, solar-powered lighting and native planting to support local wildlife. A new flood wall and upgraded drainage system form a core part of the works to reduce future flood risk.

Consultations with residents and environmental groups shaped the final design. The council secured £18 million in government funding, supplemented by private investment, to cover the estimated £32 million total cost.

Expected Benefits and Timeline

Officials project the scheme will create 480 construction jobs and 150 permanent roles once complete. Improved amenities are expected to attract visitors, support existing businesses and raise nearby property values. Regular public progress reports will be published throughout delivery.

Groundwork is due to start in spring next year, with the first park section opening in 2027 and full completion targeted for 2030. The council has stated that environmental monitoring will continue after handover to ensure biodiversity targets are met.
